A norm-referenced
test is a type of assessment used in education that allows teachers to compare
a student’s results to someone else. A norm-referenced test refers to a method
of evaluation that produces results allowing an educator to see if a student or
group of students have performed better or worse than a controlled reference
group. Norm-referenced tests sometimes called NRTs, utilize multiple choice
format and some open-ended questions to obtain results.
Advantages
of NRT
·
They
are easy for instructors to use.
·
They
work well in situations requiring rigid differentiation among students.
·
They
are generally appropriate in large courses.
Disadvantages
of NRT
·
An individual’s
grade is determined not only by his/her achievements, but also by the
achievements of others.
·
No indication
of pre requisite knowledge for more advanced material has been mastered.
·
Less
appropriate for measuring affective and psychomotor objectives.
·
Encourage
competition and comparison scores.
